Save Our Planet

Many of the children who participate in our programs get inspired to take action in their communities to help improve the environment. The good news is that there are many free or low-cost ways you can help JMF save planet Earth right now. Take a minute to read through this list and think of what you can start doing today:

Recycle your old, used items. You can recycle computer paper, newspaper, magazines, aluminum cans, soda and juice bottles, glass, plastic containers, cereal boxes, grocery bags, vitamin containers, shampoo bottles, ink cartridges, cell phones, oil, rubber tires and even clothes. You can reuse the items yourself, take them to a recycling center or donate them to a local charity. You might even get some money back for your efforts.
Make your own backyard compost pile to recycle your yard trimmings and animal waste.

Plant a tree in your backyard. Better yet, get permission to plan a day to plant trees, flowers and plants with family and friends at a local park or school.

Pick up trash. Gather some friends or family members and see how much trash you can find. Many people like to go to local beaches to clean up the beach areas, but you can also do this in a local park or around your neighborhood. Just be careful – wear gloves and wash your hands after touching the trash!

Buy canvas bags to take to the grocery store instead of using (& wasting) plastic bags. Keep your reusable bags in your car so you already have them with you the next time you go to the supermarket.

Ride your bike. You might not be able to ride your bike to work, but going on a bike ride with your family is a great alternative to driving somewhere. Plus you’ll be exercising at the same time!

Conserve energy by turning off lights that you aren’t using. Better yet, use compact fluorescent light bulbs throughout your house. They last longer and will reduce your home’s energy consumption.

Conserve water. Turn off the faucet when brushing your teeth. And next time you go to a hotel, don’t make the staff wash your towels and change your sheets each day. Most likely, you don’t wash these everyday at home anyway.
Teach others how to follow your example!

We hope you found some ideas to help you start your own “Save Planet Earth” conservation plan. We like to know what you are doing to help. Please keep us updated and send us photos of you in action – you might see them featured here in the future! Also, we are always looking for new ways people can help save the environment.
